Connection Control

IronMail Connection Control is the first offering to combine two innovative techniques: traffic shaping and reputation services. This combination dramatically increases the message handling capability of IronMail and reduces cost for organizations fighting spam. Connection Control uses spam scores from IronMail’s unique Spam Profiler technology to create a local reputation database of senders to identify spammers, and then dynamically limits or rejects messages from offending senders. The result is the highest performance in the industry and therefore the best return on investment for our customers.

Stop Spam with Connection Control

IronMail's Spam Profiler examines over 1000 characteristics of each e-mail message.
This real-time information is used by Connection Control to more effectively limit the flow
of e-mail to your e-mail security system.

Slamming the Door on Spammers

By using the highly precise IronMail Spam Profiler to determine real-time behavior of e-mail senders, Connection Control zeroes in on the worst violators and denies them access to your e-mail network.

  • Combines network-based traffic shaping and objective reputation services to create a dynamic database of senders who consistently send spam, and then rejects their connections.
  • The reputation database is maintained on every IronMail unit to provide timely and precise response to spammers.

A New Approach to an Old Problem

Connection Control takes the fight to the spammers by forcing them to spend extra time and money to send spam. By reducing the financial incentive of sending spam, IronMail forces spammers to rethink their approach or halt operations altogether. When dealing with spam assaults on their servers, network administrators can choose whether to take an offensive or defensive approach:

  • Tough Defense – Connections (and the associated messages) from violators are rejected at the gateway, providing the maximum performance benefit and ensuring that only desired mail enters your network.
  • Aggressive Offense – Turns the tables on spammers by accepting a connection, but slowing the flow of e-mail to a handful of messages per hour. This makes domains protected by IronMail very unprofitable targets for spammers.

Innovation Born of Market Leadership

Connection Control provides the following features:

  • Dynamic Connection Rejection – Identification and rejection of connections from targeted IP addresses to limit the number of messages that reach IronMail and restrict the resources available to the offending IP.
  • Rejection Intervals – By relying on data gathered by the IronMail Global Network, CipherTrust research has determined the optimal intervals to reject and allow connections.

Connection Control integrates with other key IronMail technologies, including:

  • Anomaly Detection Engine – Examines and controls overall traffic flow for IronMail to identify threats.
  • Threat Response Updates (TRU) – The IronMail global network comprises over 2500 IronMail units in the field. The TRU system provides data and updates to IronMail units as needed.
  • TrustedSource™ – CipherTrust’s reputation service, TrustedSource, maintains data on millions of e-mail senders globally, and provides real-time information to IronMail appliances on a sender’s e-mail sending behavior via the TRU system.
