Anti-Phishing - Protecting Employees from Email Fraud

Phishing is a form of fraud used to gain personal information for purposes of identity theft. Using fraudulent e-mail messages that appear to come from legitimate businesses, these authentic-looking messages are designed to fool recipients into divulging personal data such as account numbers and passwords, credit card numbers and Social Security numbers.
– Computerworld, January 2004

While phishing targets individuals, it also presents a problem for corporations:

  • If employees are not protected, enterprises could be held liable for not putting protections in place to prevent fraud
  • If a hacker impersonates a company, then the company’s reputation and brand are at risk
  • An attack could also result in employee login information being compromised, allowing a hacker to “log in” to an employee’s network account.

IronMail Protects Companies and Employees from Phishing

The best protection against phishing is to prevent these attacks from ever getting to the user’s inbox. Since most phishing attacks proliferate through unsolicited e-mail, spam filtering technologies are the primary source of defense (along with employee training to recognize and report these scams) against phishing attempts.

New technologies are also coming online to help prevent phishing. One such technology offered as a standard by Microsoft – and supported by CipherTrust – is the Sender ID Framework (SIDF), which prevents spammers from spoofing known brands by verifying the source of each email. This technology holds great promise but is still in its infancy. For more information on SIDF, visit Microsoft.com.
